Overview

The course supports the skills and knowledge development requirements for access into the engineering working environment and contains 3 components:

  1. Engineering qualifications (Combined) - Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Performing Engineering Operations - City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Engineering
  2. Essential skills at an appropriate level in: Numeracy/Literacy/ICT
  3. Also broader transferable skills - Employability/Personal and Social Skills/Health Literacy.

You will learn basic health and safety, how to read and take fundamental engineering instructions in order to carry out basic MIG Welding and Fitting activities.

  • Welding - Produce the following MIG welds to specification in the Flat and Horizontal Vertical position
  • Fillet lap joints
  • Tee fillet joints
  • Corner joints
  • Butt joints
  • Fitting - Produce components to specification including
  • Hand sawing
  • Band sawing
  • Filing
  • Drilling
  • Threading equipment
  • Power operated machines
  • Essential Skills and Broader transferable skills in preparation and to support working in an engineering environment.

No Formal Qualifications Required.

Successful Interview.

The Mandatory units (includes Health & Safety) are assessed by an online multiple-choice assessment. The practical units are assessed by short answer question papers and practical tasks completed in the college workshop.

Completion of the Skills for Life and Work Level 1 in Engineering enables career progression to the Level 2 Engineering Traineeship/Apprentice NI or Level 2 Apprenticeship in Engineering (Production Welding).

You will be supported to complete Essential Skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT at an appropriate level.

You will also study broader transferable skills in Employability, Personal and Social Development and Health literacy.

You will be supported to gain a work placement in the Engineering sector.
