This growing sector provides exciting career opportunities, and students can begin their journey with the IMI Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Maintenance.

Successful students may progress onto IMI Level 4 Award in the Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and Components, enhancing their technical expertise and career prospects.

This course is ideal for individuals seeking to develop their knowledge of electric and hybrid vehicle systems, including repair and component replacement. It is particularly suited to those who may encounter these vehicles during routine maintenance activities.

The programme equips students with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to work safely with electric and hybrid vehicles, including those with high-voltage systems or potential damage.

This qualification provides a valuable introduction to a specialised and rapidly evolving industry. It complements existing skills and experience, enabling learners to work safely, confidently, and effectively within their current or future roles.

The content of this qualification has been designed to give the learners the knowledge and skills required to work safely on Electric/Hybrid vehicles whilst carrying out diagnostic, testing and repair activities. This may include vehicles that may have or had damage to their high energy/electrical system.

Skills and knowledge covered:

  • working safely on an electric/hybrid vehicle
  • using information to carry out the task
  • carrying out repairs on high energy electrical systems
  • recording information and making suitable recommendations.

Suitably qualified in a recognised automotive qualification and attained the IMI Level 2 Award in Electric / Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance.

Practice observation

You must be observed by your assessor completing all of the following tasks on at least one occasion:

  • isolate, carry out safety checks and disconnect a high energy system battery
  • remove and test the suitability of a high energy system component
  • refit and reinstate component, carry out safety checks and reset vehicle systems post-repair.

On completion students could progress to the IMI Level 4 Award in Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and Components.
