From the 23rd February to 9th March, culinary students from each of our three campuses embarked on an unforgettable journey in Reykjavik, Iceland! This incredible opportunity was funded by the Turing Scheme and organised by South West College in partnership with IDAN, a CPD training centre for craft and trades in Iceland, offering our students a chance to study and work in one of the most unique culinary landscapes in the world.

The Turing Scheme offers education providers the opportunity to apply for funding to support their students with study and work placements around the world. Our students were invited to apply for this scheme, and those selected were eager to learn more about Iceland's distinctive culinary scene and gain hands-on experience in some of Reykjavik's best restaurants.

During their time in Iceland, our students honed their craft in prestigious kitchens alongside international chefs at KOL Restaurant, Monkeys Restaurant, Sandholt Patisserie and Bakery, and the Harpa Concert Hall. They explored Iceland's natural wonders, from the majestic Gullfoss Waterfall to the erupting Geysir, the stunning Kerid Crater, and the breathtaking Thingvellir National Park. They even had the chance to witness the magic of the Aurora Borealis!

This trip was more than just a culinary adventure; it was a life-changing experience that blended culinary excellence, adventure, and personal growth. The students gained independence through real-world experiences, making memories that will last a lifetime.

Working in the kitchens of Reykjavik was a dream come true! I learned so much from the international chefs and got to try my hand at some amazing Icelandic dishes. This experience has definitely shaped my future career in the culinary world and how many opportunities I can have in the future.

“This trip was an incredible opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in a new culture and culinary environment. They not only developed their culinary skills but also grew personally and professionally. We're incredibly proud of their achievements and the experiences they've gained.”– Sara Cox, Lecturer

This Icelandic adventure has undoubtedly enriched the students' education at South West College, providing them with invaluable experiences and skills that will benefit their future careers. South West College has had a very successful and collaborative working relationship with IDAN since 2006 to provide placements in Iceland and looks forward to many more student focused trips in the future.

Working in top restaurants and exploring Iceland’s nature was an amazing experience. I feel more confident in my skills and excited for the future. And seeing the Northern Lights was something I’ll never forget!
