The Workhouse is proud to host the CORE Student Hub, an innovative initiative designed to support students in their academic and professional development. Sponsored by Go Succeed and supported by South West College (SWC), this initiative offers students a collaborative space where they can enhance their entrepreneurial skills and gain valuable insights into the world of business.

On Thursday, March 20th, Councillor John McClaughry, Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, visited the CORE Student Hub. During his visit, students participated in an engaging interactive session with KIPPIE, focusing on gaming and entrepreneurship. The session explored how students can turn their passion for gaming into a business, while also developing essential skills to enhance employability in the industry, including networking, portfolio building, and attending industry events.

The visit highlighted the Hub's dedication to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship within the local community.

The CORE Student Hub is a fantastic addition to The Workhouse, providing students with a space to grow and develop their skills,” said Councillor John McClaughry.

The support from Go Succeed has been pivotal in bringing this initiative to life, and we are grateful for their commitment to supporting young talent in our district.”

The CORE Student Hub serves as a platform for students to not only strengthen their technical expertise but also improve their soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability—skills that are crucial in today’s competitive job market.

Paul McGovern, Lecturer at South West College, emphasized the importance of nurturing these abilities alongside technical know-how.

While technical skills are vital, it’s the soft skills—such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability—that truly differentiate students in the workplace,”

Mr McGovern said. “The CORE Student Hub provides a unique environment where students can enhance these skills, preparing them for success in both employment and entrepreneurship.”

In addition to Go Succeed, the support from South West College’s Erne Campus has been instrumental in the project. The Hub is open to students from various programs, including Visual Media Arts Game Design, with Year 1 and Year 2 Foundation Degree students actively participating in the initiative.

Kate McGrath, Business Manager at The Workhouse, highlighted the significance of connecting students with local entrepreneurial opportunities.

“The CORE Student Hub not only helps students develop their technical and business skills, but it also encourages them to consider starting their own business locally,” Mrs McGrath said.

“This initiative contributes to the growth of the region’s creative and digital economy and offers students a chance to explore the opportunities available to them right here in Fermanagh.”

The CORE Student Hub continues to provide students with valuable educational and networking opportunities, reinforcing The Workhouse’s commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. As it evolves, the Hub remains a key resource for students seeking to build their skills and prepare for future success.
