Overview

**This course below is for day provision not part-time provision.​**

This qualification is recognised as being the sole pathway to becoming a JIB registered electrician in either electrical installation or electrical maintenance. Possession of a City & Guilds Level 3 in Electrotechnical Technology entitles the holder to apply to be recognised on the UK Register of Electricians. You must be in paid employment to enrol on this course.

You will learn a range of practical skills including; Health and Safety legislation, Environmental legislation, Installation Practices and Procedures Electrical Scientific Principles, Inspection and Testing, Fault Finding and Diagnosis, Design and Installation. You will develop your hand skills in the use of associated hand, measuring and power tools. You will also complete a number of classroom based units related to the practical skills.

This qualification is designed for learners wishing to gain an apprenticeship within the Electrotechnical industry. Learners will gain the skills and knowledge to carry out job roles and responsibilities associated with the installation and maintenance of Electrotechnical systems. On successful completion learners will have achieved the industry desired level of competence required to carry out the specific roles. This qualification is available at Level 3 only and aimed at learners wishing to commence a career within the Electrotechnical industry.

Throughout the apprenticeship, in addition to the above skills and knowledge, a range of core behaviours will also be developed: evidence of team working, effective communication, a strong work ethic and an awareness of health and safety issues.

You must be employed by a company that has a base in Northern Ireland and is registered as an employer with HMRC. You must have achieved a minimum of grade C in both GCSE Maths and English or their equivalent and be assessed by the training contractor and employer as having the aptitude and ability to successfully complete the apprenticeship.

A GCSE grade C or equivalent in ICT and a relevant science is desirable.

Employment is at the discretion of the employer who may have specific expectations in terms of medical/physical requirements. In particular, it is recommended that you visit an optician for a colour deficiency test, the result of which may determine your ability to do the job.

South West College reserve the right to refine entry criteria should demand exceed available capacity.

Assessment comprises workshop and workplace practicals, on-line tests, open book assignments and written and portfolio based collation of on-site evidence (years 3 + years 4). Candidates will have to sit a final exam (AM2 test).

This qualification will lead directly to industry employment or progression to Level 4 Site Supervision.

Successful apprentices can progress to the Foundation Degree Building Services with Sustainable Energy (Validated by The Open University) at South West College subject to meeting entry criteria.
