Level 1 - no formal entry requirements.

Level 2 Entry Requirements

Have completed Level 1 Welding or already working in welding and fabrication industries.

Candidates will be required to complete the following assessments:

Level 1

• FIVE practical assignments covering basic welds and positions:

1. beads on plate in the PA flat position
2. lap fillet weld in the horizontal/vertical position
3. tee fillet weld in the flat position
4. tee fillet weld in the horizontal/vertical position
5. corner weld in the flat position

• All welding plate/sheet sizes to be 200 mm long minimum by nominally 50 mm wide.
• Acceptance to be assessed by visual inspection.
• To gain an Award the candidate must successfully complete all five practical assignments and the oral questions.

Level 2

• FIVE practical assignments covering multi-run and positional welds:

1. butt weld in the flat position
2. multiple-run tee fillet in the horizontal/vertical position
3. lap fillet weld in the vertical-up position
4. tee fillet weld in the PF vertical-up position
5. butt weld in the PF vertical-up position

• One oral underpinning knowledge test
• All welding plate/sheet sizes to be 200 mm long minimum by nominally 50 mm wide.
• Acceptance to be assessed by visual inspection and destructive testing.
• To gain an Award the candidate must successfully complete all five practical assignments and the oral questions.

A Level 1 Award in Introductory Welding Skills (MIG/MM/TIG) could help you develop your welding and fabrication career and take on jobs that require basic skills. After taking a Level 1 qualification, you can progress to the City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Welding Skills.

The Level 2 Award in Welding Skills could help you develop your welding and fabrication career further and take on jobs that require more specialist skills. After successful completion of this qualification you can progress on to a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Fabrication and Welding Engineering or a City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Advanced Welding Skills.

Applying to the City & Guilds Award in Welding offers you the choice of one of the following options pending availability per campus/start date as detailed below:

• City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Introductory Manual Metal Arc (MMA) Welding
• City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Welding
• City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Introductory Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding

• City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Welding Skills

On the first evening of the course, you will choose which available Level 1 Award you prefer to undertake.

You may be asked to undertake a welding assessment to deem your suitability for City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Welding Skills.
