South West College (SWC) are introducing a new course in September 2021, City & Guilds Level 3 Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing. The course is available to study part-time in Omagh. The qualification focuses on the technical skills and knowledge required to be a professional dental nurse.
Units of study on this course will include direct chairside work and support during a range of dental treatments, organisational and legal requirements which underpin high quality dental care, and the role of the dental nurse in meeting patients’ needs. This course meets the requirements of the General Dental Council (GDC) for Dental Nursing.
The Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing is a Level 3 course and will require an interview. The course is assessed through work place observations, completion of a trainee portfolio of evidence, and by examination. Applicants must be age 16 - 24 with 5 GCSEs grades A-C Working in a dental practice – 21 hours per week minimum Workplace mentor: GDC registered.

The dental industry has numerous opportunities for dental nursing and the launch of this new apprenticeship is in response to sector demand to both upskill existing staff and attract new talent into the industry. Our apprenticeship programme will help people take the first step on their career journey in health services. Apprentices will receive dedicated tuition, mentoring and support to help them develop new skills, gain qualifications and a foothold in an industry offering pathways for specialisms including hygiene, oral health, dental radiography, orthodontic therapist, treatment co-ordinator, management or education.”
