Congratulations to South West College (SWC) apprentices, David Bateman Smith and Joseph Hagan who have been announced as SkillPLUMB finalists and have finished in the top eight in the UK. The Plumbing apprentices will now participate in the SkillPLUMB UK final after excelling at the national qualifying heats at the recent Construction Industry Training Board NI (CITB NI) annual SkillBuild NI Finals 2023 competition.

On November 15th and 16th, David and Joseph will go head-to-head with six other competitors at Oldham College as part of the WorldSkills UK National Finals. During that week, 50 competitions will be held at nine different venues across Greater Manchester.

SkillPLUMB, organised by industry charity BPEC, is part of the WorldSkills UK competition framework. The event is sponsored by Monument Tools and supported by other industry sponsors such as Muller Europe, Worcester Bosch Group, DeWalt, APHC, JIB-PMES, SNIPEF, Grohe, Water Safe, CIPHE, Plumbmaster, and McAlpine Plumbing Products.

To win the SkillPLUMB title, the eight competitors will have to complete a complex task involving the installation of a central heating system and hot/cold water system. This includes a boiler, unvented hot water cylinder, associated pipework, and bespoke designed copper radiators.

Congratulating them on their achievement, Chris Robinson, Head of Work Based Learning at South West College, said:

“It is fantastic to see so many of our apprentices excelling at this level putting themselves against the best apprentices in the UK in their chosen vocation. The success of these students is testament to their efforts and dedication to develop their skills and careers. This is only possible with the continued support of their employers and lecturers and my sincere thanks to them for this investment in developing their students and workforce.
