Clare Future Proofs Her Legal and Financial Career

08 Sept 2021

Savvy Clare Quinn, from Ardboe, is ahead of the field as she future proofs her career studying a revolutionary BSc Hons Degree in Corporate Law and Finance, right on her doorstep at South West College. This specialist higher education course was designed to fill a gap in the current academic market within Northern Ireland and offers learners like Clare a direct route into a broad array of growing careers within a multitude of industries.

Clare completed her GCSEs and A-Levels at St Joseph’s in Donaghmore. In pursuit of a career that offered stability alongside possibilities, Clare transitioned to the South West College, Dungannon campus, enrolling on a BTEC Level 3 in Business. She enjoyed the more flexible learning style and gained an in-depth understanding of all the key aspects of business, including marketing, finance, management and business environments, which opened up a wealth of employment and further education opportunities.

However, Clare was determined to acquire higher-level qualifications that would allow her to succeed within the lucrative Legal and Financial Sector. So, she decided to advance her career prospects, studying the new Open University, BSc Hons Degree in Corporate Law and Finance at the South West College, Omagh campus.

She said: “The array of quality assured degree courses available locally within the College surpassed my expectations. I was instantly drawn to the new BSc Hons Degree in Corporate Law and Finance as it provided a unique interdisciplinary approach combining law and finance, matching my career aspirations, and offering future job security.”

Clare was among the first cohort of students to undertake the highly regarded course, which provides the legal education and qualifications to ultimately pursue a wealth of robust careers in various fields, including banking, finance, government, management, business and humanitarian work.

She said: “My experience at South West College has been amazing! The tutors are phenomenal and have provided extensive academic and personal support with each learning module tailored to our specific needs. Thanks to the ongoing support provided, I have already acquired a wealth of specialist knowledge centred around business laws, including an awareness of the law and the legal and financial implications of business operations from an international perspective.”

Clare would highly recommend the course to others and aspires to branch into the highly sought-after interdisciplinary areas of law, economics and finance, specialising in either corporate law or accountancy when she completes her degree in two years.

Siobhan Breen, Deputy Head of School - Business Management and Specialist Education at South West College, said: “Over the past number of years, a number of international legal and financial firms have relocated to NI. This has led to an increasing demand for graduates in the sector. At SWC, we spotted a gap in Higher Education for developing graduates with specific knowledge of both corporate law and finance. Using Stock Market Trading software, we can simulate trades to support the learning and give students a feel for finance.

Students who study in both the legal and financial fields possess a rare skillset which is highly sought after by employers. The programme focuses on the law affecting major global financial markets and their regulation. In Northern Ireland, we have access to legal/financial centres in both Belfast and Dublin. Students will gain a thorough knowledge of how law works, as well as how finance shapes leadership and risk management within organisations paving the way towards a rewarding and lucrative career.”
