The aim of this course is to build upon the interest learners may already have in the field of civil engineering, to develop their skills, deepen their understanding, and prepare them either to progress to Higher Education in the field, advance within their current employment or enter the industry directly. The practical nature of the course helps develop the learner's expertise in the area of civil engineering through hands-on experience, case studies, and projects. Learners will develop skills, knowledge and understanding using the latest industry-standard software and technologies.

An apprentice is a student employed as full-time member of staff working for a company three to four days a week. One or two days a week is spent at college, studying a level 3 Pearson BTEC National Diploma.

• You must be a new employee, or an existing employee taking on a new role to take part in the programme. Be employed by a company that has a base in Northern Ireland and is registered as an employer with HMRC, and be contracted to work a minimum of 21 hours per week with one employer.

• Individual employers may also apply their own criteria at the recruitment stage.

• The student is employed all year round but college classes run from September to end of June.

• Employers pay for the day the apprentice is in college and is required to pay a minimum full-time wage in accordance with the national minimum apprentice wage.

• To successfully complete the apprenticeship, you must achieve the following essential skills qualifications as part of the apprenticeship, or already hold a recognised equivalent:

Application of Number – Level 2

Communication – Level 2

Information and Communication Technology – L:evel 2

• Apprentices must be aged 16 to 25.

• Employers must be based in Northern Ireland

The course is suitable for students wishing to progress to a Foundation Degree in Civil Engineering or other construction related Foundation Degree at SWC, including Higher Level Apprenticeship in Construction Engineering with Surveying.

The student experience will be enhanced by visits to construction sites helping to contextualise the learning. Guest speakers from disciplines across the industry also regularly deliver lectures on specialised topics.
