Due to the demands of the workplace changing there is a need to reframe our understanding of workplace skills.
Business leaders believe that these skills are not “soft skills”, as if they are optional within the workplace, but “power skills”, as they are a fundamental requirement.
It is important that the student has the core knowledge and skills of their own discipline i.e. subject specific, essential skills and digital literacy.
Creativity, the ability to deal with new situations, deal with non-routine tasks, and solve problems, is increasingly critical in the modern workplace. Technology has changed the nature of work and the speed of change is continually increasing. Therefore, creativity, problem solving, the ability to deal with new and unfamiliar situations, is central to professional skills. It also helps them develop abilities that lead towards an enterprising and entrepreneurial attitude.
Students will develop their verbal, non-verbal and presentation skills to help improve communication techniques. These skills underpin all the other skills.
This is a key element as almost all work involves working collaboratively with a team. Students will be encouraged to work with others verbally and non-verbally as well as to actively listen to others interacting respectively. Students will develop team working skills, leadership skills and the skill of showing commitment to the activity.
This skill covers the ability of a learner to organise – on an individual or team setting, and to plan and monitor time, resources, and tasks. The ability to determine what tasks need to be carried out, to plan and schedule work, to monitor at appropriate intervals and modify the work as it progresses to deliver a required result within given constraints.
Confidence, resilience, a growth mindset, are all characteristics that learners develop as they successfully complete tasks and problems and learn that they have the capacity to tackle a problem, work with a team, and deliver a result. Solving problems and making decisions will develop their confidence and resilience. Working with others on a project as well as using their self-initiative to solve problems improve their growth mindset.
