Could you leave the car at home one day a week?

For many of us, getting in the car is automatic. It’s convenient, familiar and sometimes necessary.

But what if we changed just one journey?

Walking, wheeling, cycling, public transport or lift-sharing can mean less congestion, cleaner air, lower emissions, more activity and more money in your pocket.

That’s why transport policy across the UK and Ireland increasingly puts walking and wheeling first, followed by cycling, public transport and, finally, private cars.

Adopt Active Travel

It doesn't matter whether you're travelling to college, work, the shops or meeting friends. If you're powering the journey yourself, it's active travel.

Breaking the car habit

Car dependency isn't simply about individual choices. Our towns, roads and transport systems have been designed around the car for decades.

But habits can change & campuses can help.

The more visible and normal walking, wheeling and cycling become, the easier it is for others to choose them too. Safer routes, better cycle parking, facilities and good public transport can all help make leaving the car at home a realistic choice.

So don't think about giving up your car. Think about giving it a day off.

Could you try one of these this week? Walk it. Wheel it. Cycle it. Bus it. Share it.

One journey might not feel like much. But imagine if hundreds of our staff and students each changed one journey a week.

Help us make it easier

We're developing our Active Travel Plan and want to hear your ideas.

What would make it easier for you to leave the car at home?

A safer route? Better cycle parking? Improved facilities? Lift-sharing? Better information?

Tell us what would make the difference.
